Franklinton Cycle Works has some exciting events coming up. The best part is, for most of them we will be partnering with some of our favorite organizations and businesses in Columbus!

First up: On May 2nd, get ready to party with Cycling for All! $10.00 buys all you can eat salad and pizza at Columbini’s Sports Diner, 894 W Broad St 43222, on Thursday, May 2, from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM. Join in the raffle, silent auction, and other fun stuff while you support a great cause. In collaboration with CycleVets and Franklinton Cycle Works. Support CFA AND show some love to Franklinton- everyone wins!

Also: On May 14th, our 3rd annual Ride the Elevator fundraiser with Y ay Bikes! compliments of the awesome local Elevator Brewing. After party at everybody’s favorite Hal & Al’s.

Then: On June 2nd, we will be participating in the Tour of Franklinton Race & Rally organized by Team Six One Four and supported by many local businesses and organizations. Click on the link above for more information.

Next in line: On June 15th, the all new Franklinton Food & Fitness 5K. We are hoping this will also become an annual event, especially because proceeds from this run will not only benefit FCW, but also two organizations in our own neighborhood: Franklinton Gardens and Gladden Community House.

Finally: Our 3rd annual Swap Meet fundraiser. Come meet other cyclists, enjoy some food truck grub, and buy used parts from individual vendors. Better yet: become a vendor yourself. Vendor fees TBA, but all proceeds go toward keeping the lights on and the doors open at FCW! You won’t regret participating in this event.

Intermediate Mechanic Training Course 201

Description:

This time, the west side’s bicycle cooperative is offering a six week course, totaling 12 hours of classroom time, which will provide students with a deeper understanding of bicycle maintenance and more advanced techniques of bicycle repair. The intermediate course is designed for people who have completed Bike School 101 or have a general knowledge of bike mechanics. If you’re looking to move your skills beyond the basic tune up, this is the class for you. Class sessions are limited to 12 participants and the total cost is $70. Discounts and partial refunds are available to current volunteers or those committed to volunteering.

Class details:

• Where – 897 West Broad Street Columbus OH, 43222
• When – Wednesdays April 3rd through May 8th
• 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM
• What – Four 1.5 hour classes
• How – Bring your bike. We’ll provide the rest.
• How Much – $70 for all six classes and the cost of Park Tool Blue Book

Curriculum:

• Week 1 – Wheel Truing (both lateral and radial) and Bearing Service on the front wheel
• Week 2 – Bearing service on the rear wheel and bottom bracket, and maintenance of free wheels and cassettes
• Week 3 – Brake adjustment and cable replacement
• Week 4 – Derailleur adjustment and drive train maintenance
• Week 5 – Head set service and bike fit
• Week 6 – Bike building exercise, graduation, and celebration

Our classes are a mixture of lecture, lab and study. Some of Columbus’s best mechanics will provide instruction through lecture, and then lead labs in which students practice these skills on their own bikes. Students will be offered the opportunity to practice further on Tuesday evenings, or Saturday afternoons, although it’s not required.
Each student will receive a copy of Park Tool’s Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repairs. The book contains detailed guides for all topics covered in the class as well as about 100 others. Students will be expected to read specific chapters before coming to class to make the most of their time. If you already have a copy of this book, the $15 cost will be waived from your total.

After registering, you should receive a confirmation email, followed by a class preparation email within a couple weeks of the start date.

Shop Updates

It’s been far too long since we have updated you on shop renovations, our re-opening, and fun events!

Our shop was closed from mid November through the new year in order to make a few changes in our shop. We added a new double-armed work stand and accompanying tools, created a new system for used inner-tube organization, re-organized much of our used parts inventory, added a new display case for parts reservations and even more new inventory, added another row of used tire storage, and cleaned up the “stacks” area just in time for a large mountain bike donation. All 100% volunteer efforts and time– remarkable!

Now that we are open for 2013, we will be running the shop on our new “team” schedule. Each Saturday of every month, a different volunteer team will run Open Shop. Keeping a volunteer-run organization and shop can be tricky, but we think our new team system will allow for sustainability and longevity. Don’t hesitate to pop us an e-mail if you would like to volunteer on a team just once a month! It is a great way to become more involved, participate in something meaningful, learn about mechanics, and meet great people.

The day we re-opened, January 5th, we had a fun group swing by– Tweed Ride Columbus! We will post some great photos of the riders in our shop soon, along with shop renovation photos.

Confluence Year

Confluence is hosted by St. John’s Episcopal Church in Franklinton, Ohio. Confluence is a service-learning program for recent college graduates or young adults with comparable experience who commit to a year of spiritual formation, vocational discernment, social justice and intentional community. Starting in late August, interns work 35 hours per week in direct-care or administrative positions at some of Columbus’ most innovative and caring social service agencies. The interns live in intentional community, sharing the Hospitality House in Franklinton owned by St. John’s Episcopal Church. They will receive support and educational enrichment through Confluence staff, neighborhood partners, and the congregational community of this historic church in Franklinton.

Franklinton Cycleworks will be closed Thanksgiving weekend (Saturday the 24th) as well as the month of December 2012. We will be adding another double-armed stand and accompanying tool sets so that we can accomodate even more repairs during Open Shop. We will also be spending this time organizing tools, parts, and training new volunteers. We will re-open on Saturday, January 5th, 2013, operating under our new team system.

We still have a couple volunteer mechanic spots open on Team 1, which runs the shop the first Saturday of every month. If you have mechanic experience and want to commit to volunteer once a month, please email info@franklintoncycleworks.org.
We will be posting work day times on Facebook for the month of December, so if you would like to help us rearrange the shop, stay tuned.

Tim’s Organic Pantry

Big shout out to Tim’s Organic Pantry! They will be generously donating 5% of their September proceeds to our shop.

Tim is an Ohio native who loves to cook delicious food with great ingredients. He has catered local independent film shoots as well as numerous charity events and parties. Tim has studied baking at the King Arthur Flour Cooking School in Vermont. A former US Marine, Tim is passionate about biking and animal rescue. He believes in supporting local businesses and locally grown foods. Tim prepares all of his meals in a fully licensed and inspected commercial kitchen.

Wet Floor…

This past Tuesday we cancelled Volunteer Night because of a ceiling leak. Every time it rains we set out buckets and collect a lot of water. We are not cancelling Open Shop today, but if you plan on coming in, be cautious of the wet floor. I spy 8 large trash cans/buckets from where I am sitting…

We hope to fix it as soon as possible, but we appreciate your patience in the mean time. We will keep you posted on the schedule, don’t hesitate to check our Facebook, Twitter, this website, or email us before you head to the shop on any day it’s raining.

SUBS> Sell. Ur. Bike. Stuff.

Join us on August 19th from 1-4pm for at 897 west Broad st. for FCW”s annual Swap Meet.

This year we are calling it SUBS> Sell Ur Bike Stuff. Vendors will roll out their used bike gear for discounted prices and sell whatever they can. Patrons will come to scope out the bike parts and FCW merchandise. Not that interested in Bike gear? Well you can still hang out and support FCW by buying food and coffee from some great food carts, both of which are donating some of their proceeds to us.

We will be celebrating SUBS this year by eating some of the best burgers in Columbus from Hungry Monkey Food Truck. (We couldn’t find a good meaning to the acronym BURGS for the event). Check out their menu on Facebook by searching hungrymonkeyfoodtruck. We recommend the Joe Dirt and the Wyatt Erp!

You can also purchase some coffee from Columbus’ first Solar Coffee Roasters. Solar Cafe will be on site and will be donating 1 dollar per every cup of coffee they sell.
