Youth Programs

FCW holds Open Shop hours primarily for adult commuters and local residents. For several reasons, FCW requires that children under the age of 16 need to be accompanied by an adult during open shop hours. While very necessary to the safety and flow of Open Shop, this fact keeps many kids away from the tools and space we have provided for others to maintain their own bicycles. As a result FCW decided to create a structured and educational bike mechanics class for elementary and middle school students to meet the need.

Our first Youth Program started in the winter of 2011 in the form of a 5 week mechanics class in partnership with Columbus State Community College’s ESL After School Program. Working primarily with a West Side Somali population, we taught elementary and middle schoolers the ABC’s  of bike mechanics.

Currently we are excited to be sharing our ABC’s of Bike Mechanics courses with the youth at Gladden Settlement House two blocks away from our shop! In the years to come we hope to partner with several community organizations to provide similar programming.

This year we have gathered three adult instructors to teach the Air, Brakes, Chain and Safety lessons and have welcomed two former program graduates to facilitate mechanic lessons to their peers. Check our facebook for pictures of our different youth programs.
